Faulty basin waste before replacement in Bexleyheath

The basin before repair, with the faulty waste assembly removed after the original plug had broken away from the outlet.

Project story

What the work involved

01 · Assessment

The problem

The customer contacted us after the plug in their bathroom basin broke and came away from the waste outlet. The existing basin waste assembly could no longer be used correctly and required replacement. When we inspected the basin, we found that access to the waste and trap was restricted by the existing pedestal. The pedestal therefore needed to be removed to provide safe and suitable access to the waste fitting. During the inspection, we also noticed that the existing trap seals were becoming old and brittle.

02 · Approach

Work completed

We first removed the existing basin pedestal and disconnected the trap to gain suitable access to the waste fitting. The faulty basin waste was then removed and replaced with a new waste assembly. Once the replacement had been installed, we refitted the existing trap and filled the basin before running water through the system to check the new waste and surrounding connections for leaks. After confirming that the installation was watertight and operating correctly, the pedestal was reinstated. A neat white silicone seal was then applied around the pedestal to leave the area clean and properly finished. We also advised the customer that the existing trap and seals were showing signs of age and recommended replacement as a preventative measure.

03 · Result

The outcome

The new basin waste was successfully installed and the basin was returned to normal use. The waste and trap connections were tested with no leaks identified. The pedestal was securely reinstated and resealed, leaving the basin functional, clean and neatly finished. The customer was also provided with our recommendation regarding the ageing trap and seals for consideration as future preventative maintenance.

Why the pedestal had to be removed

Access to the basin waste was restricted by the pedestal directly underneath the basin. Removing the pedestal and disconnecting the existing trap gave us enough space to safely remove the faulty waste, fit the replacement and inspect the surrounding connections before everything was reinstated.

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace a broken basin waste in Bexleyheath?

Yes. We carry out basin waste, plug and trap repairs and replacements across Bexleyheath and surrounding areas. The exact work required depends on the type of basin, existing waste and access underneath.

Do you need to remove the pedestal to replace a basin waste?

Not always. On this job, the pedestal restricted access to the waste and trap, so it was removed to allow the replacement to be carried out safely before being reinstated and resealed.

How do you check a new basin waste for leaks?

After fitting the replacement waste, we fill the basin and run water through the waste and trap while checking the surrounding connections for any signs of leakage.

Should an old basin trap be replaced at the same time?

It depends on its condition. If the trap or seals are showing signs of age, brittleness or deterioration, replacement may be recommended to help reduce the risk of future leaks.
